Amazons

The word Amazon is used to describe a strong, self-willed woman however there is evidence that such a race existed. The phenomenon of women warriors was considered very strange by the ancient Greeks but there have been tombs recently excavated and remains of female warriors found; such a tribe was the Samatians .

Herodotus the Greek historian mentions that the descendants of Amazons were the Sarmatians/Sauromatians and Scythians. Both the fighting on horseback and the use of the bow and arrow as primary weapon links the Greeks descrioptions and what we know about the tribal peoples from the steppes. 

Before modern archaeology uncovered some of the Scythian burials of warrior-maidens entombed under kurgans in the Altai region of Siberia, giving concrete form at last to the Greek tales of mounted Amazons, the origin of the story of the Amazons has been the subject of speculation among classics scholars.

Aristotle speculated that the relative contributions of the female and the male parents were very unequal--the female was thought to supply what he called the "matter" and the male the "motion."
